THE AMERICAN SYRINGOMYELIA & CHIARI ALLIANCE PROJECT, INC. IS A NON-PROFIT, 501(C)(3) DONOR-SUPPORTED ORGANIZATION WHOSE MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF PERSONS AFFECTED BY THESE DISORDERS WHILE WE FIND A CURE.
CHIARI MALFORMATION
A SERIOUS NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER WHERE THE BOTTOM PART OF THE BRAIN ("CEREBELLUM") DESCENDS OUT OF THE SKULL AND CROWDS THE SPINAL CORD. THIS PUTS PRESSURE ON BOTH THE BRAIN AND SPINE, AND DISRUPTS THE NORMAL FLOW OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID (CSF).
SYRINGOMYELIA
A SERIOUS NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER WHERE A FLUID-FILLED CYST ("SYRINX"), DEVELOPS INSIDE THE SPINAL CORD, STRETCHING THE CORD AND DAMAGING NERVE TISSUE. UP TO 90% OF CASES INVOLVE A CHIARI MALFORMATION, SPINAL CORD INJURY, TUMORS, AND ARACHNOIDITIS. WHY SYRINX'S FORM ARE NOT KNOWN, BUT MIGHT INVOLVE THE ABNORMAL FLOW OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID (CSF).
